Graduate Certificate in Compositing and Tracking

Rising Sun Pictures [“RSP”] is internationally renowned for providing stunning visual effects for live-action feature films. Since 1995, the company’s studio has worked on nearly 100 feature films including Pan, Tarzan, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Gravity, The Wolverine, The Great Gatsby, Prometheus, The Hunger Games, the Harry Potter series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Terminator Salvation and many more.

In partnership with the University of South Australia, RSP has created a unique Graduate Certificate in Compositing and Tracking. This 12-week intensive program offers rising visual effects artists the opportunity to work on real world visual effects [“vfx”] challenges in a simulated production environment at the Adelaide studios of Rising Sun Pictures. Combining the use of industry tools such as Nuke, 3DEqualizer, Maya and Shotgun, students are able to up-skill existing technical and creative skills to achieve tangible industry outcomes.

The program has a dedicated focus on honing students’ existing tracking, paint, and 2D skills. Students will also directly benefit from face-to-face sessions with key staff from all levels of the business. This is your chance to not only acquire industry-ready compositing and tracking skills but also to gain valuable insight into the business of making vfx from one of the industry’s most established companies. You will join in our company meetings and events, and work with our recruitment team to professionalise your resume and reel. This program offers unique vfx industry insight.

Note: Students at RSP are not engaged in creating work the company delivers to a client and will not benefit commercially. The aim of this program is to increase the number of qualified, industry-ready artists by unlocking and sharing our experience. RSP has established relationships with other vfx houses globally, and are happy to recommend suitable graduates.

Program outcomes

At the completion of this program, graduates will be able to demonstrate the following:

• Tangible vfx focused software skills using 3DEqualizer, Nuke, Maya and Shotgun.
• Industry standard vfx camera tracking, matchmoving, paint & roto and basic compositing.
• An ability work to deadline and to supervisor brief, independently and as part of a team.
• Plan shot execution, breaking down creative and technical shot requirements.
• An understanding of departmental and industry best practices and techniques.
• Navigation and task management using Shotgun and other vfx production techniques.
• Final presentation of your professional portfolio and resume.

Who is this program aimed at?

This program is designed to build on students’ existing skills base. It is not designed for beginners. Successful applicants will already have some skills creating live action work in Nuke or 3DEqualizer. Applicants with experience in Maya and Linux may also be considered.

As an applicant, if you have not completed visual work using Nuke, 3DEqualizer or Maya, you are encouraged to download the free learning edition. See the software area in RSP’s Getting Started page.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS:
“This course was incredibly enjoyable and was easily the most well put together, comprehensive and intensive course I have undertaken. Jeremy is a fantastic teacher and the ability to work on feature film material while learning industry standard methods and techniques was invaluable. Being included in things such as the staff meetings and screenings, as well as work shadowing, Day in the Life Of talks and our meetings with recruitment were also really beneficial.”
Rebecca Wells, Student, Graduate Certificate in Compositing and Tracking, February 2017

“I really enjoyed my time learning at RSP. Not only for the actual learning side, including the previous films we worked on & aiming for high quality with detailed feedback, or learning a actual studios pipeline, but for all the amazing artists I met. I had many interesting conversations, so many were willing to give advice & show interest that I was always learning new things.

The day in the Life chats are also a great opportunity to learn about every department, & getting a sit down & 2 presentations by the recruiters gives graduates a extra step up in knowing what to put in a job application. This course gave me a level of confidence in my skills that I’ve never had before & for that I’m forever grateful. Thank you RSP for investing in the future of juniors & in turn the future of your company & the Australian industry.”
Monika Batchelor, Student, Graduate Certificate in Visual Effects, September 2016

“(I enjoyed) the whole experience. Having access to industry professionals on a daily basis. Having each department explained to us and how it fits in to the production pipeline. Working on quality material for lessons, learning real world expertise at real world time requirements. Best exposure to future work environment you could have.”
Drew White, Student, Graduate Certificate in Visual Effects, July 2015

“I really enjoyed being included in the company, surrounded by awesome people who all had similar goals as myself – that’s both RSP employees and students alike! It was awesome having teachers who not only shared their skills, but also gave advice about the industry in general. I really got the sense that they cared in what we achieved.”
