Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting

Rising Sun Pictures [“RSP”] is internationally renowned for providing stunning visual effects for live-action feature films. Since 1995, the company’s studio has worked on nearly 100 feature films including Pan, Tarzan, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, Gravity, The Wolverine, The Great Gatsby, Prometheus, The Hunger Games, the Harry Potter series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Terminator Salvation as well as the sixth season of HBO’s hit TV series, Game of Thrones.

In partnership with the University of South Australia, RSP has created a unique Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting.  This is a 12-week intensive program that immerses students in a simulated studio environment, while providing the necessary theoretical and practical skills to produce complex visual effects for film and screen. Taught exclusively at world-renowned visual effects studio, Rising Sun Pictures (RSP), students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to gain employment as visual effects specialists in the global visual effects industry.

Students will also directly benefit from face-to-face sessions with key staff from all levels of the business. This Graduate Certificate is designed to not only acquire industry-ready 3D visual effects techniques but also to gain valuable insight into the business of making vfx from one of the industry’s most established companies. You will join in our company meetings and events, and work with our recruitment team to professionalise your resume and reel. This program offers unique vfx industry insight.

Note: Students at RSP are not engaged in creating work the company delivers to a client and will not benefit commercially. The aim of this program is to increase the number of qualified, industry-ready artists by unlocking and sharing our experience. RSP has established relationships with other vfx houses globally, and are happy to recommend suitable graduates.

Program outcomes

At the completion of this program, graduates will be able to demonstrate the following:

• 3D visual effects techniques such as dynamic effects (particle-based simulations such as explosions, water effects, textural effects, clouds)
• Procedurally generated environments such as cities, beaches and forests; and computer generated lighting applications.
• An ability work to deadline and to supervisor brief, independently and as part of a team.
• Plan shot execution, breaking down creative and technical shot requirements.
• An understanding of departmental and industry best practices and techniques.
• Navigation and task management using Shotgun and other vfx production techniques.
• Final presentation of your professional portfolio and resume.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS:

“I enjoyed what I learned and I loved the environment. I enjoy seeing how the employees work on the floor and how they are so much more than employees, they resemble more of a family. Being given the opportunity to work on the student short was a great experience. Working on live plates really has helped me moving into the working environment.”
