Dan Wills

Houdini Instructor, Uni SA’s Media Industry placement and Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting

With over 10 years experience creating explosions, magic effects, transformations and procedural cities, Dan Wills is arguably among the most knowledgeable Houdini effects artists in the industry. His credits include Xmen: Days of Future Past, Wolverine, Pan, the last five Harry Potter films, Hunger Games, Teminator 4, The Great Gatsby, Gravity and many other highly recognisable titles. Dan runs internal training sessions for our artists here at RSP, as well as lecturing our UniSA Third Year Media Industry Placement students and also RSP’s latest offering, the Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting.

Jeremy Kelly-Bakker

Rotoscope and Compositing Instructor, Graduate Certificate in Compositing and Tracking

Jeremy got his start at Rising Sun Pictures at 19 as a trainee. In the years since Jeremy has worked at Animal Logic, Fuel VFX, Luma Pictures, and Kojo as a compositor on projects such as Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Iron Man and Captain America.
Jeremy has remained active with Adelaide film and television productions, working on locally produced shows such as Danger 5, Wastelander Panda and The Pack. He has directed three award winning short films around China in Mandarin and Cantonese and continues to write and direct his own short films and stories outside of work.

Greg Wieder

Lighting Instructor, Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting

Greg has extensive experience as a Lighting Technical Director and also as a Pipeline Developer.  He completed a Bachelor of Computer Animation & Film Production at the Edinboro Univeristy of Pennsylvania and has since worked as  a Lighting TD on movies like Pan, Gods of Egypt, X-Men: Apocalypse, Game of Thrones and the The Legend of Tarzan.  Most recently, Greg undertook the role of Pipeline TD on xXx: The Return of Xander Cage and also Logan.

Greg has also had previous teaching experience as a lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University in the Masters of Entertainment Program.

Qazi Hamza Javed

Instructor, Modelling and Texturing

Qazi is a Modeller / Digital Artist at Rising Sun Pictures, he creates production-ready Organic (Character/Props) and Hard Surface (Props/Environments) assets. When he’s not modelling, Qazi is busy busy working on developing and testing out various modelling pipeline tools.  Credits include Logan, xXx: Return of Xander Cage and X-Men: Apocalypse.  Qazi has previous teaching experience at University and TAFE and teaches both the Intro to Modelling and Texturing short course and also the Modelling and Texturing unit from the Uni SA Media Arts degree.

Shawn McCarten

Lighting Instructor, Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting

With over 7 years of experience in the industry, Shawn McCarten commenced his career in visual effects as a render wrangler on Deadline Gallipoli, from there he was a paint and roto artist and has since worked as a lighting artist at Rising Sun Pictures on productions like X-Men: Apocalypse, Game of Thrones, xXx: Return of Xander cage, Logan, Alien: Covenant and most recently Thor: Ragnarok.  As a graduate from Uni SA, he returns annually to present to Media Arts students about his own pathway into the industry and what it takes to be employable.

Sam Hodge

Lighting Instructor, Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting

Sam is one of the computer graphics knowledge bases here at RSP with experience ranging from the story telling to software engineering with everything in between. Coming from a background in genetic engineering, he retrained into creating life through polygons and pixels back in the late nineties. He has over thirty Hollywood feature credits mostly at Rising Sun Pictures, including VFX Oscar winning films Gravity and Avatar. Sam’s experience includes working in creature setup, lighting, CG supervision and pipeline. He started with RSP in 2005 and loves being able to share his experience with the students, he keeps to to date with current trends in technology never wanting to miss out on the next new thing, currently dabbling in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Sam is passionate about teaching and finds it very rewarding.

Paul Kirwan

Instructor, Introduction to Compositing for Film in Nuke

With an 18-year-long career in visual effects for feature film, Paul Kirwan has worked as a digital artist and supervisor on some of Hollywood’s biggest movies. His film credits include Gravity, Titanic, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and worked at facilities such as Digital Domain, Industrial Light + Magic, Weta, and Rising Sun Pictures. Working with such directors as Alphonso Cuaron, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Michael Bay and Australians Peter Weir and George Miller, he has shared in four Oscars and four Baftas for Best Visual Effects.

Paul has used Nuke since starting at Digital Domain in California in 1996. He has run Nuke courses for all levels from beginners to industry veterans, within VFX companies, as part of University undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, and to the general public.

Roberto Genito

Animation Instructor, Introduction to Animation short course

With over 7 years of experience in the industry, Roberto has worked at Luma Pictures, Dr D Studios and Ambient Entertainment.  His specialties include: character animation, paint/roto, layout, tracking, match-moving, pre-viz and motion editing. Roberto’s movie credits include Happy Feet, Guardians of The Galaxy, Deadpool, Game of Thrones, and most recently Thor: Ragnarok.  As a graduate from TAFE SA, Roberto also occasionally teaches after hours in the Advanced Diploma of CGI and VFX program.

Kieran Ogden-Brunell

Houdini Instructor, Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting

Kieran is a highly motivated and passionate Senior FX TD with experience in leading teams and sequences. He has over 10 years production experience, including 12 feature films, over 16 game cinematics, 4 Televisions commercials, 3 music videos and 4 published game titles. Film credits include: Logan, X-men: Apocalypse, Gods of Egypt, Warcraft, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Kieran has a keen eye for everything effects and loves working with other enthusiastic and driven people, who like himself, like breaking, burning, destroying and disintegrating things!He enjoys writing tools and helping other artists get the job done and gets a kick out of getting high quality work delivered to the client.

Thomas Cant

Thomas Cant is an Adelaide-based effects artist whose recent credits include X-Men: Days of Future
Past
and Pan. He’s an excellent teacher who enjoys sharing the skills he’s learnt at RSP with those new to the field. Thomas teaches the third-year Media Industry Placement we run with the University of South Australia, as well as the Graduate Certificate in Dynamic Effects and Lighting.
